Five days after Donald Trump became president, his administration ordered the Executive Order entitled ‘Border Security and Immigration Enforcement’. This order called for the secretary of homeland security to begin planning, designing and constructing a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in order to begin controlling the amount of illegal immigrants entering the country. The order also lead to an action to hire as many as 5,000 new Border Patrol agents. Another way immigration control would be attained is by empowering state and local law enforcement to act as immigration officers.

During Trump’s presidential campaign, one of his main promises was to have Mexico pay for a wall that secured illegal immigrants from crossing the border into the United States. As reported by the news website The Hill, the House Appropriations Committee allocated $1.6 billion to begin construction of the wall between the U.S. border and Mexico on July 11. This money that was approved by congress is coming out of the tax payers pockets. Since Donald Trump did not win the popular vote in the race against Hillary Clinton, there are millions of U.S. citizens that disapproved of the wall that will have to contribute to the construction. As stated in a Reuters article, the wall is expected to cost as much as $21.6 billion and take more than three and a half years to construct.

The executive action was put into effect in great haste. This has American’s wondering if this was the best way to deal with the immigration problem in the United States. In reality, the vast majority of illegal immigrants are already in the country. As stated in a OverstayNew York Times article, about 60 percent of undocumented immigrants have been here for at least a decade. Since the prevailing reason the country has so many undocumented immigrants comes from visa overstays, the billions of dollars that are going into building the wall should be used to implement an effective biometric entry-exit tracking system. According to Politico Magazine, this tracking system screens foreign nationals and helps in preventing them from overstaying their visit.

The reason so many Americans disapproved of what Trump represented during his presidential campaign was because of what his words and intentions implied. Illegal immigration is a problem in our country but when the President of the United States categorizes Mexicans with drugs and crime, it leads many people to assume his intentions are discriminative. Trump’s ideas were met with civil unrest because citizens assumed ‘Make America Great Again’ implied that keeping out immigrants was the best way to accomplish just that. This led to a very dangerous rhetoric.

The words and intentions uttered by Trump has led to many cases of unconstitutional behavior. An NBC News Article mentions the situation in which a United States citizen named Carlos Bolanos was arrested while working on private property with no search warrant or crime committed by the victim. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents did not state a reason as to why they put the hispanic man in handcuffs and refused to show identification. The legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon condemned the act and stated that the agents broke the law when they restrained Mr. Bolanos.

The administrative action that the Trump administration issued has planted a notion of division among the citizens of the United States. The people that the Border Security and Immigration Enforcement order has impacted hold the firm belief that the country views them as a threat and does not want them. This supports our opinion that the Trump administration is only serving to further divide the country.

The Great Wall of worthless Expenditure

According to an article published by the guardian, Tom from Pennsylvania wrote about a recent meeting president trump had in the white house. Pennsylvania, known as a swing state for the last presidential election has many trump supporters. These supporters are a bit unease, the promise of the border wall with Mexico still has not been built and many original Trump wall supporters are disappointed. They are disappointed due to the fact that the wall project has not begun and other issues are being considered a priority while the topic on the wall has been put on pause. In the article, a supporter talked about how the wall must be built first before any other issues, issues such as DACA, security, and immigration control within the U.S.

I believe DACA is a very important issue to be dealt with at this moment, even though these individuals aren’t promised a full residency, it not only helps our economy by maintaining them under this program, it also gives those who want to professionally better themselves an opportunity to do so. I think spending time aiding those following the educational path will offer a better outcome for all, people will be getting educated and the American economy will continue to benefit from this program as it has been since 2012, making it a better option than spending so much unnecessary US taxpayer money to construct a wall which was initially promised it would be paid by Mexico. Our money should be invested towards education, health care, better forms of agriculture and infrastructure.

It is also insinuated that our national security is a priority once again. We all agree that security/illegal immigration is a task that must be dealt with, but once again it is a project with no true benefit. The wall does not guarantee security as many experts have already mentioned. Beginning with its price, it is insanely pricey and it has zero guarantees that it may work. An article recently posted by The Atlantic mentions the following: “By itself, sealing the entire border wouldn’t prevent all illegal immigration. Many undocumented immigrants in the United States also enter the country legally, whether on a visa or through port of entry, and then stay longer than allowed. Nailing down the share of the undocumented population deemed “overstayers” and those who have crossed the border illegally is a difficult task, given that they’re not likely to report either way.” This article also notes the fact that most narcotic trades are done thru oceanic routes. Also, an interesting fact is that most illegal immigrants comes from China and no known terrorist have ever been reported of coming through our southern border.

Finally, I believe that just as it occurred in Australia, if the issue on immigration wants to be dealt with, laws have to be set. Those seeking a migration result would not be granted citizenship, Australian migration stopped, meaning there weren’t anymore boats nor drownings leading that nation to once again have a border and support from its citizens in “fair” migration.
